German Sports
• German Sports have gained worldwide popularity. It is also the national pride of Germans. Germans are also quite sport loving people. Anyone in Germany can keep himself physically active by taking part in german sports. In Germany group activities, team sports and competition take place very frequently. Playing with neighbors and friends can be one of the activities of Germans. Germans are usually rich people and they follow their cutural traditions. Germany sports also falls under the domain of cultural activities and therefore plays a major role in Germany. The German sports include volleyball, basketball, field hockey, track and field events, skiing, ice skating.
• Soccer was the most popular game in West Germany until 1980. In 1954, 1974, 1990 West Germany won the world cup.
• Tennis is also one of the favorite sports of Germany. In international competitions the German players came out to show off their skill. They had brought many championships to their country.
• East Germany also gives excessive support to the sports . The residents of East Germany use sports for acquisition of worldwide recognition. During the period of 1960s the communist athletes started winning medals for various sports activities. Those Germany sports include track , winter games, field, swimming etc. The secret of the popularity of Germany sports is probably their disciplined life, well organized training procedure and efficient trainers. There is an allegation regarding the German sportsman that they take anabolic steroids or drugs to increasing their energy level. In 1972 East Germany participated at the Olympics as a national team. In 1980 also Germany became one of the giants in the winter games. The region of East Germany take their sport to be very serious.
• Germans knew about baseball and american football although they did not decide to play one of these new world sports. In recent years some sports had been more popular than others, basketball had an unusual amount of fans, but the king of these sports in Germany was soccer. Thousands of amateur soccer clubs provide the opportunity for Germans to play soccer. Soccer is a spectator sport that draws in about 25,000 fans per game. The Germans had one the World Cup three times eversince 1990, Germany even held the World Cup in 2006 but they came in third behind France and Italy.
In Germany, golf is still something of an elitist sport, considered a pursuit of the well-to-do, an expensive diversion for tycoons and the upper class of business. Public golf courses are virtually unknown. Beautiful golf facilities can be found, but usually at a price. If you are a golf fan, your best hope is that your company can provide you access to the sport. Usually, the only alternative is to join a golf club or pay relatively high private greens fees. The German Open golf tournament is held in Düsseldorf in August.
Historical Person: Boris Becker
Boris Becker is one of the giants of tennis. He is in the Hall of Fame. Boris Becker was born in Leiman, Germany on November 22, 1967. Boris Becker was the young boy who shocked the world when he won the 1985 Wimbledon. Boris was the youngest German champion and was the first unseeded player to win the Males Single Championships. Boris defended his championship next year when he played Ivan Lendl in the finals. Boris had gone to the finals 7 times out of ten years. Boris played in the Davis Cup from 1985-1999 and lead Germany to victory in 1988 and 1989. Boris has also received a gold medal won in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain where he paired up with Michael Stich to win the doubles event.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin is one of the famous sites of Germany it is not only the capital of Germany but it is also the home of the Olympiastadion which was the stadium of the 2006 World Cup finals. Soccer is one of the biggest German sports and the fact that the Germans had the honor to host the 2006 World Cup was a very big deal.
